Well here's the reason why I am a SRT owner!

Story: At the beginning of January I was heading out to my house driving down an industrial parkway that turns into a country road. The weather was nice for a change(higher than 0º!) but windy, the roads were clear, no ice, no snow, no water, nothing I SHOULD have been worried about.

Well once the road turned into a country 2 lane I picked up speed to about 45mph (in a 55), after going about 1/4 mile I got past a tree line only to encounter about 6" of snow and black ice combo that had drifted over the road for about a 150' section. I hit the brakes while I still had traction but once I hit the ice, the truck started drifting across the center line with some help from gusty winds that aided in lining my drivers side door up with an electrical pole. There was no way I was going to take my chance with that so I accelerated and maneuvered towards the ditch. When it hit the ditch it rolled hard once and skidded on its roof for a bit. I killed the ignition right away, and then kicked my way out since there was dirt up past the top of the doors restricting them from being opened.

Not more than 2 minutes after I got out an S10 skidded through the same section I went through and crashed in the ditch 20' in front of me. Emergency Services were on the scene within minutes, while they were there a state trooper put his cruiser in the ditch a couple hundred feet down the road, as did another motorist. The county then closed down all of the E/W bound roads in that area for the rest of the night. I would love to show you a pic of the road, but at the same time EMS showed up so did a snow plow to lay salt to cover the evidence.

The airbags did not deploy since the bumper sensors weren't touched but I walked away without a scratch. If I didn't have my seatbelt on things could have been A LOT worse as my sunroof was open to enjoy the "warm" evening.

Once we got it to my friends shop it started right up and idled like nothing happened! Almost every body panel was touched though, so it ended up being totaled. On the bright side, I replaced it with a factory 5.9 killer :D 2008 SRT8 WK fully loaded.

Gotta love taking delivery in the middle of a Chicago winter!

Luckily you were not hurt.

Welcome to the forum and the next level of ownership. I would suggest a good set of snow tires for next year (hard to get rims so shop early) as with snows, my jeep is great in the snow.

Crappy way to upgrade but you will be very happy with the SRT8. I came from a modded WJ as well and it was a great jeep but the SRT8 is so much better and more refined.

Glad you got out unscathed as that definitely could have been nasty. Let's let your education on your new BEAST begin....You have a 6.1 liter under your hood unless you got a slow one. :D

Wow, glad to hear you walked away unhurt from that wreck.

The SRT8 looks sweet.

This winter has definitely been the worst on the roads in a while with the snows, black ice, and high winds causing drifting and white out conditions.

How true.

It is sad to see a nice WJ like that bite the dust that way. Did you buy it back to sell off the parts?

Buy back was too much, and my Z occupies the garage/all my free time so I didn't want to go the trail rig route but I did manage to get some of the parts.:ninja:

2002_Viper_GTS_ACR: why all the fake blood ?

LOL that was the PS reservoir leaking through the hood once she got flipped upright. It looked like a murder scene after I left.
