: What Is Going On With These Smaller Engine Cars Today.
RMRSRT 03-03-2008, 03:53 PM My brother-in law just picked up a Honda Accord Coupe V6-V-Tech.
I mean the thing has 268HP and does 0-60 in 5.7 and the 1/4 in 14 seconds flat. I know we are about a full second faster but we are talking about 420HP vs 268HP and a HEMI 6.1 vs a V6 3 point something. And to top it all off he gets about 20 MPG on the street and 28MPG on the HWAY. The more I think about the more I see our beast become extinct sooner rather than later. I just had to vent because there is no way that a Honda Accord should only be a second slower than our rigs.
The technology is just getting way too good in favor of the smaller more powerful, less fuel consuming vehicles.
Inferno SRT8 03-03-2008, 03:57 PM 4800 Ibs w/o driver compared to probably 2200 Ibs w/ driver, aero dynamics compared to NO aero dynamics. Your in a brick and he is in a wind breaker.
And 1 second is a hell of alot of time to make up. 1 second is a bus lenth at the track. Unless you seen one do it in 14 seconds flat I wouldnt count on that time at real life tracks.
navyavi469 03-03-2008, 04:00 PM Dont forget you drive a truck, not a car... puts you in a slightly different class. 268 horsepower... NONE of which is made down low... and not enough torque to unscrew the cap from grandma's jar of jelly. The area under the torque curve is a measure of total work performed; yours looks like the rock of Gibralter, his looks like the Eiffel Tower.

I hear you man but I expect certain vehicles like a porsche, Subaru, etc to keep up or to be even faster but this is a Honda Accord(Americas best selling Family car, next to the Camry)

Winston I swear to god you crack me up! Unscrew a cap!!!!!
LMFAO!!!
navyavi469 03-03-2008, 04:05 PM Thanks, I try :D
Simple power to weight ratio... you can still smoke him with four sets of golf clubs, 2 passengers, and the family dog hanging out the window.

Umm...wow...where do some of you people come from. And as said before...a second in the 1/4 is huge. It costs alot of money to shave a full second off a 1/4 time. Furthermore...you are definatley not comparing apples to apples. That being said...I am sure there is a Honda dealer near you...GO BUY ONE and enjoy your rice!
ROLLINHI 03-03-2008, 04:22 PM And if that Accords performance and cost compared to the jeeps angers you...imagine how navyavi feels that his $10,000 Yamaha R6 will put between 2 and 3 seconds on a stock srt... Some people's kids....
HoustonSRT-8 03-03-2008, 04:42 PM My brother-in law just picked up a Honda Accord Coupe V6-V-Tech
The have a V6-V-Tech model now?

These things are fast! LOL
ROLLINHI 03-03-2008, 05:06 PM damn your a D!CK:eek:
thats funny as hell though:D
LOL. Thanks. Sorry it took so long to respond...was at the honda dealer. Traded the Jeep on an Element and the wifeys bimmer on one of those sweet Accords. Couldn't be happier! Does anyone know where I can get a supercharger for the element? I mean it's fast...but I think it needs just a tad more...can't let the wife have a faster car:rolleyes::D
All in good fun...all in good fun.
navyavi469 03-03-2008, 05:21 PM good lord, half a minute to get to 130... whats that in the Jeep, like 17 seconds?
I hit 130 in around 11 seconds, bwhahahaha!

haha not even close. an Elise only breaks in at 1900ish so there's no way an accord is even close to 2200. In fact i'd be willing to bet it doesn't even break the 3000 mark considering the corvette is around 3100 I think.
however, yes...it's still probabyl 1000 pounds lighter and has better aero dynamics.

I totally understand that I am not comparing apples to apples, oranges to oranges, blah blah. My point is that performance nowadays is no longer at a premium. A lot of us on here throw up kill stories against Subarus, Vettes, Evo's etc etc... With that being said maybe we should'nt anymore because based on your response it's not an apple to apple comparison. We should just stick to the TBSS, Ford Lighting Kill stories. I never said I was unhappy with my truck and I should go buy a Honda. I was only putting the facts on the table and trying to ilicit responses.
ROLLINHI 03-03-2008, 06:14 PM (In a deep monotone enlightening voice) Oh my fellow srt owner friend guy...from now on...everytime I see a Honda, Sube, or any rice burning automobile for that matter...I shall turn to the north north east, kneel down beside the beautiful chariot, and with one hand on my heart and the other on the fuel door... praise the automotive gods for for letting the Japanese build such a jaw dropping, "fast for it's weight", fine piece of machinery:browsmiley:
Thank you so much my fine sir...for everything is just so much more clear now.
rha600 03-03-2008, 06:16 PM don't ever look into the lotus Elise....180ish horse power and it will give a new corvette a run for it's money. the new Exige 240 will hang with a Z06 in the straight line and would probably eat it for lunch in the twisties.
ROLLINHI 03-03-2008, 06:21 PM The Elise isn't a bad car. Not for me though....a little too "yuppie roadster" for me. Isn't the Exige supercharged? I've always like the old Lotus Espirit's though...late eighties early nineties...they never really chaged much anyway...they were a cool looking for car for the era.
navyavi469 03-03-2008, 06:24 PM I just want to someone someone with a 2JZ single turbo Elise... would be the fastest bloody thing ever created.
rha600 03-03-2008, 06:29 PM The Elise isn't a bad car. Not for me though....a little too "yuppie roadster" for me. Isn't the Exige supercharged? If I still lived in FLA I would probably have an elise or exige instead of the Jeep. the car doesn't have even half the luxuries of our trucks but my god does that thing fly. and it handles like a little go cart!
YoungMedic23 03-03-2008, 06:30 PM Sounds like that Accord can hang with the Hemi's!
rha600 03-03-2008, 06:34 PM I have a civic that runs 20's with 105 hp. fear the civic!!!!!
ROLLINHI 03-03-2008, 06:36 PM It's gotta be more than just fast for me. I mean give me ten grand and and 86 K-car...I can make it fast...but do I really want that. And before you even jump me there killer...by no means am I comparing an Elise to an 86 K-car( as nice as the staion wagon ones were, especially with the wood grain like sides!) I'm just saying...it's gotta have more than just balls. And those things are pretty naked inside and they look like a miata on crack and HGH.
rha600 03-03-2008, 06:41 PM oh, I know they are very sparse inside. and believe me I am not happy about that in the least...but you need to drive one and take it through a couple off ramps or twistie roads. i'm not saying you'll want to go out and buy one, but you'll understand where that car really shines. I've had a lot of motorcycles in my life, R1, CBRs...and this car is as fast in the turns as I ever was on my bike.
but all in all, i'm actually glad I did move and bought the Jeep. I think i'll have a lot more fun with it and I LOVE all that torque.
ROLLINHI 03-03-2008, 06:45 PM I hear ya man. I know the owner of a Polaris dealer nearby...he just bought one...an Elise...not the Exige...I'll check it out.

I agree. I don't see Honda advertising the Accord as a racecar, but you mention its stats and you get three pages of snorting & whining. I'm not sure anybody got your point.
2200 lbs? I think 3400 would be more like it. But that's not the point. The point is the Accord is about as ordinary a car as you can buy, but it's also extraordinary. Is it as fun as my Jeep? Don't think so. Or as roomy, or as unstoppable in bad weather.
But 60 in under 6 is moving, and lots of stuff moves just fine these days. Demanding a gallon of fuel for every 13 miles might not be cool for much longer... I'm glad I got my Jeep now... but there are lots of fast cars at your corner dealership... no matter what they sell.
Oh, and the Honda is available with a stick-shift.

I am by no means claiming that our rigs should be that much faster. I am just surprised that an Accord can have that much performance for about 30K and can hang in there pretty well. I mean I expect that kind of performance from an Audi, Supra, 350Z but this is an Accord. Hey Kudos to Honda for setting a benchmark in the Sporty Coupe line under 30K. I'm not looking to piss people off on here by claiming that the vehicles are alike. I was simply surprised to see there stats.

Very well said. The point is not at all that our SRT Jeeps and the Accord compete with each other - but just to point out how good a plain vanilla sedan is nowadays.
Not that long ago my daily driver was a Taurus SHO - 220 hp, 7000 rpm redline, 0-60 in just under 7 seconds, considered state of the art.
The industry has come a LOOOONG way since then.

Cool! My '95 was a 5-speed too. Wasn't quite ready for it but went out and bought it as soon as I realized the '96s were all autos.
Were you a member of SHOtimes? And secret-handshake-test: did you do the manual tranny drainplug mod?:browsmiley:
