Hey guys,
I wanted to know if anyone could tell me how to go about this..?

I want to get the black sections of my front and rear bumper painted silver to match the rest of my car like in the pic below. I saw that bigpimpin had done the same to his red srt8 i saw around the picture gallery. I called maaco and they said the paint might not stick to textured bumper. What I want to know is how he got his to look smooth after the paint job. Bigpimpins srt8 is an 06 so the bumper texture is the same on the black parts, but it looks so smooth. I have a paint guy and I'm not sure how to tell him to so it?

Anyone have any ideas?

It will take some work, but it can definitely be done. I was initially going to do it as well, until I learned that the black parts are actually part of the whole bumper (as opposed to individual pieces that could be separated from the rest of the bumper). Anyhow, as with ANY paint work, prep is paramount. You MUST take the time (or have your body guy do it) to properly smooth the pieces. Don't just let them throw a flex agent into the paint and paint over the texture. It must be sanded smooth for it to look right, and to stick for the long haul. It cerainly will look killer if you do it. Getting into the corners of to sand and smooth will be the most time consuming.

I've been considering doing what ge2 has done to his trim AND the black parts of the bumpers (including the piece on top) and the chrome part of lower front bumper. Now I just have to figure out which shop around here can do it right. My favorite shop won't work on a Jeep, he only does German and Italian cars :( I tried to convince him the Jeep was German. Besides the prep they would need to paint the rear and maybe the front piece "wet"...this is the term the body shop that painted the rear valance on my 96 M3 to indicate that it comes out shiny with no need to wet sand (it's almost impossible to wet sand into little corners like on the rear). That shop also won't work on Jeep's, just German cars and the shop they recommended me to sucks (I've used them to fix something on my Chevy truck).

Probably should go ahead and do the roof rails too???

If you guys had bought the fastest color, you wouldn't have this dilemma. ;)

Yes-- that is correct. I wouldn't suggest Macco either. Find a custom shop.

;) And you guys are right, I shouldda just bought black.

I've had black once...never again!!! I can't stand owning a vehicle that is only clean for the first 5 minutes after you wash it. I do love black, I'm just too anal retentive to enjoy it on my own cars.

I do have to say that the color matching you did on you side trim and window trim (and I think it was you that did the roof rails too) looks awesome. But for some reason that color paint has a high drag coefficient. Weird huh? Has anyone tried to figure out why this is?

I can't figure it out either. It is SO slow. I notice a big difference from the stock chrome trim. Once it was painted in just feels like I'm dragging sand bags behind me :)

Guys, take a look at the 2007's. The front and rear bumper covers are painted exactly the way you want them to be.

I put in a call to an SRT Engineer last night. He asked not to be named for fear of losing his job. He told me that the red, silver, and now the blue Jeeps are equipped with an automatic drag chute that deploys anytime WOT is achieved. It then self winds back into its secret location. He wouldn't tell me where its hidden, but only that they did it as a punishment for those of you who didn't buy black. Those guys are crazy. Well, anyhoo, I have to go back to work.

You know what, we got screwed on a lot of things, especially for the price of these babies. i.e. the front and rear bumper covers being painted, H.I.D. Headlamps (still don't have them standard, which is silly), Remote Start, and Rear Back-Up Camera, and there's probably a couple others I am missing, those are just the ones I would of liked to have come standard. JMHO.

Thats the problem with buying the first year of a new model. All of our complaints/suggestions get addressed in year 2.

Yes sir, you are exactly right. Atleast we can upgrade to those various accesories. It's not like upgrading the engine. Now that would really piss me off. If the first year they offered the 6.1, and then the next year say they put a 6.6L in (like the one that's suppose to be in the Challenger). JMHO.

Oh, that's going to happen at some point. it may not be the engine but it will be another big ticket item (tranny, maybe)

Oh, you, me and thousands of others as well. But you know there's going to be something new and exciting that comes along and makes us want to sell the 06's for the 08's. Maybe traction control that can be completely disabled. Or a power liftgate. Or how about a power adjustable steering column. I just hope that when the 6.6L Hemi comes out, I can shoehorn it into my Jeep without too much problem.

Heres the thing.
I saw my paint/body guy today. He said said he could do it. When I talked to a guy at maaco, he said he could do it but not guarantee it won't chip or come off. my guy said he would put something into the paint that would help it stick. Do i take the chance? I mean I know it will look good right off, but over the next couple years, I don't want it to look like crap.
do you guys think it will be okay on that type of plastic?

Some people seem to think the black plastic on the silver looks good and kinda off sets the car.

What do you guys think?

Lets take a poll.
To paint OR Not to paint?

jordo9998

and my paint guy also said there would be no sanding before the prep...

He has been doing body work and paint for years. I just don't know if I should even mess with it.

Not only will it cost $$ but it could after a while look like crap.

maybe i'm starting to answer my own questions... :)

I hate to be offtopic, but I didn't want to make another thread.

If any of you guys are familiar with the Laredo, which I have, can those grained lower pieces be painted (i.e the chin spoiler and the sideskirts)?

From what I hear, the tilt/telescoping wheel will be out for '08 along with sirrius video downloads, and a few more things they won't talk about. I might have to retrofit the steerin column...:)

The black plastic is made of the exact same material as the rest o the bumper. It's just textured and not painted. It's all one piece. So yes, if it is prepped prperly, it'll be perfect,a dn last just the same as the rest of your bumper. I've had plastic smoothed and painted on several rides, and have never had any problems. If you do it, demand that it be sanded first, and prepped properly. If you paint directly over the texture, flex-agent or not, the paint WILL chip eventually.
