: Will 18's Fit?
2MCHPSI 03-20-2006, 09:09 PM With all the talk of winter tires and the fact that no one makes any true winter tires in 20" sizes, I was pondering if Jeep made an 18" wheel that would fit over the SRT8's Brembo calipers.
After some diging around I found that Jeep DOES make an 18" wheel that they use on the export Overland model Grand Cherokee, the WH series.
Anyone know if it is possible toget these wheels state-side, and if they would even fit? Here is a pic of the wheel:

BLKltng 03-20-2006, 09:33 PM The perelli scorpions are an excellent all seaon tire. There great in snow and ice as well as dry and they'll fit the stock rims.
lincoln 03-21-2006, 01:40 PM There are 6 different Pirelli tires called Scorpion, which one are you referring to here??? I do think that the Scorpion Winter tire (not an all season tire) is available in 20" sizes that might work on this vehicle.

Clueless 03-22-2006, 03:23 PM Sorry to tell you guys BUT the only tires out there for this truck are Eagle RS-A! Unless someone makes a smaller diameter wheels that will fit over the brake calipers, you have NO CHOICE!
BLKltng 03-22-2006, 07:26 PM Not true. Those pirelli's come in 265/45/20 for front and 295/40/20 for the back. There are a couple others out there also.

BLKltng, check the size of your tires, they're 255 and 285 NOT 265/295. Perhaps there is enough clearance to put on 10 millimeter wider tires, but until some automotive authority tries and it and says that they don't rub against anything I would refrain from doing so.
BTW, when you go from 255 to 265~45/20 you change the overall diameter of the wheel/tire by +1.22%, switching rears to 295 changes overall size by +1.09%. Not a big deal but not the best outcome possible. Another point to consider is that 255 tire requires a rim that is 8.5" to 10" wide, while a 265 tire requires 9" to 10.5" rim. A 285 tire requires 9.5" to 11" rim, while 295 requires 10" to 11.5" rim. So checking to make sure stock rims are wide/narrow enough for the size change is crucial.
Other than that, I would say try it and let us know what happens.
BLKltng 03-22-2006, 09:45 PM I understand all these points to the fullest. The difference in tire diameter with the new tires would be 29.3 for the front and 29.4 for the rear. That is less than neglegible. Also the rims are more than wide enough to except these tires and they will definatley clear. We are talking about 5 millimeters on the inside, which is equal to 1/5 of an inch. There is over an inch clearance to the inside of the tire from the spindles up front and the wheel wells out back. Stock rims are 9" up front and 10" out back.
2MCHPSI 03-22-2006, 10:30 PM BLKltng is right, they would fit no problem, and the AWD "should" be fine at a 0.3% difference between front and back. Also, you could run 265/45-20 on all 4 tires and not have to worry about the different tire sizes between front and rear, since the 265 will work on a 10" wide wheel, but none of that answers ANY of my original questions. LOL
I was wondering if 18's would fit around our Brembo system, and if there was a way to order the Export model 18" Overland wheels.
BLKltng 03-22-2006, 10:55 PM lol...I doubt it. Just buy better snow tires for the stock rims.
idealrides 03-23-2006, 01:50 AM I'm almost certain 18's wouldn't fit, there's less than 1" of clearance around the front calipers.
Regarding increased width, in back the closest thing is the rear swaybay links. Less than 1/2" clearance, so you can't go more than 1 size larger.
Up front I'm not worried about hitting the suspension upright, I think the problem may be with the wheel well or front bumper at full lock, especially because I'm going with 265/50 and 295/45 which are about 1.3" taller. They should be here any day. :(

The problem I’m seeing with just swapping stock tires for winters and back again, is the fact that there is a chance your rims will get scratched in the process. Especially when you go back to the summer tire. The sidewalls are very stiff and the wheel is large so it'll require a bit of force on the mechanic’s part. Chances are very high they'll scratch the rim, unless it’s TireRack. I couldn’t find a local shop that was good enough. I learned the hard way.
idealrides 03-24-2006, 10:33 AM One way I've found to get an idea of whether a shop will scratch rims is by finding out what size they can mount. If they can do at least 24" rims then it's a good sign they have good equipment and know what they're doing. These shops almost always have the mounting tools that have a plastic/teflon coating which greatly reduce or eliminate scratching.
The next test is to ask them if they can guarantee that they won't scratch them. Of course they'll say no they can't guarantee, but then what happens next is critical... if the guy stares at you with an expression of "well are we gonna do this or not" then its a bad sign. A good sign would be if the guy explains that he mounts 20's all the time and very rarely does one get scratched, but he can't guarantee it based on the fact that every wheel is different.
One last thing to do is make sure they have a Hunter GSP9700. You can see who has one in your area by going to GSP9700.com and clicking on "locate". If a shop doesn't have one, then they're just a bunch of foo-suckahs!

zen garage 08-12-2006, 05:47 PM there is an 18 that someone test fit on their charger srt. if it fits on the charger it will fit on ours. i posted a link awhile back to the thread at chargerforums that gives the make of the wheels
2MCHPSI 08-12-2006, 07:56 PM Arn't the offsets on the charger and Jeep completely different?
SRTGR8 08-13-2006, 03:21 AM Does anybody know for a fact that this car won't deliver in terms of winter performance? How bad could it be? Drive safe, c'mon its the winter. And if you live in the city and get decent road attention that will help too. I'm still waiting along with everybody for winter rubbers. .....tires.
