: Radar detector input
Ok-- for those that have read my previous posts, you know I'm not a speed guy. I've never owned a radar detector, because it's never been necessary. Well, this weekend the wife and I took a 1000 mile road trip. 500 from Seattle to Boise, and 500 miles back. I got a speeding ticket in eastern Oregon's Blue Mountains. I wasn't going crazy fast or anything. It was the middle of the afternoon, on a very long straight (uncrowded) stretch of road, and I was just going with the flow. 86 in a 65. So I'd like to go ahead and get one of these fully integrated detector/difuser kits that gets installed into the ride. The custom shop I use suggested a Calbre (sp?). Anyone?
MatFab 09-25-2006, 09:39 AM http://www.radarbusters.com/products/beltronics/rx75.asp
My customer swears by that one and i will be installing 2 complete systems on his 07. he is getting the rx75plus for the front and just the rx75 for the rear... if you knew this guy you would understand his need for them..( and yes that is 2500 in radar before labor prices...)
p.s. i have never heard of the brand you mentioned but interested in some info..
lincoln 09-25-2006, 09:43 AM This has been discussed at length here before. The K40 (calibre) is a love/hate deal...more hate then love, IMHO. I'd recommend the Passport SRX or the SR7 + ZR3...both are the same thing some dealers sell SRX others sell SR7. The SRX comes with the ZR3 (Laser shifter) where it's an option on the SR7. I have the SRX on my convertible but use Valentine 1's on my other vehicles...I prefer the V1 but it's not available as a "remote" unit.
The BEL mentioned above is the same thing as the Passport.
Awesome-- thanks guys! The most important thing to me is ease of use, and hide-ability. I'll have a look at the ones you mentioned.
radduc 09-25-2006, 11:52 AM I am already having problems with my pasport/escort X 50 says it needs service to be calibriated. The unit isonly 6 months old./I think I am going to give it to the women and get the K40 for me self.
Radduc, after reading about your new land speed record, I've gotta believe you know a little something about protecting yourself from the popo.

So when your Jeep breaks down you'll give it to the wife and get the, lesser performing but more expensive, Porsche??? That doesn't make any sense to me...send it in get it fixed under warranty.
radduc 09-25-2006, 12:09 PM Porsche???What are you talking about??I am going to send in the x50 and get it fixed, then I am going to give it to the woman, and get the K40 for me
Tsrt8 09-25-2006, 12:15 PM Get the K-40 calibre and diffuser, I have it and love it, great range. I prefer the K-40 over all the above mentioned detectors.

It's called an analogy...look it up, I'm using the "logic" form here.
If you don't mind having a dash mount, which it sounds like you don't since you have one, then you are better off staying with one. Remote units are ALWAYS a step down in radar performance due to their, NOT optimum, lower mounting position in the vehicle.
Not doubting that at all, as it sounds pretty logical... but do you have any stats you could point me to that back that claim?
radduc 09-25-2006, 02:40 PM Really??? I was unaware of that, good point.
lincoln 09-25-2006, 03:25 PM I can't site any specific sources off the top of my head (except Valentine's site which might be considered biased by some, but if he thought remotes were effective I'm sure he'd make one since money is money and he's loosing all that business to others) but this information is all over the internet about how radar works and why higher is better. Our Jeeps are excellent "targets" due to their large frontage area (good radar signature), so every little bit helps. Police radar is such an inaccurate method...the speed reading is not necessarily returned from what he was aiming at but reads whatever had the biggest/best signature. For example, if the Jeep is a few lengths behind a Corvette the cop will most likely read the speed of the Jeep even if he thinks he getting the speed of the Corvette.
Lidar is a totally different story and higher is NOT better (Lidar beam is only about 3-4 feet wide at 1000 feet)...the sensors really need to be close to the reflective surfaces the cop aims the LIDAR gun at (less then 18" from each headlight, license plate seems to be the accepted standard). Again this is one reason I don't love the K40 since they give you one front sensor for Lidar and you really need two on something as large as the Jeep. I don't run a front plate, so I need one near each headlight.
I only reason I own a remote system is b/c having a dash mount is a PITA in a convertible with very little interior storage space. I hated having to take it down everytime I stopped at 7-11 for 30 seconds...the remote solves the security problem pretty well. I would never use a remote in a hardtop vehicle b/c you can lock it for those quick runs into the store amd take it down only when you think you need to. I take mine down at my office b/c it's in a high crime area, I leave it up in my parking garage with security cameras everywhere. Heck, my neighbor leaves his 8500 in center of windshield with the top down in the garage and nobody touches it...I assume that someday, someone will figure out that his parking spot is NOT seen by any of the cameras and take it.
i have an 8500 x50 and love it but if i had the money id go k40
whipple1 09-26-2006, 12:36 PM I have a valentine 1 and it works great,Its also upgradeable, send it back to the company and they update it with the latest radar tech.It has a front and back sensors and also side with arrow display to tell you where you are getting hit from, front, back ,left, right.I have it in my Denali for 2 years and no complaints never let me down,I installed it high between the rearview mirror and the sunvisor with the suction cups on the windsheild never fell off in two years.I ran the wireing along the roof liner down the A pillar and into the fuse box no wireing seen.It also comes with a plug for a power port or cigarette lighter.Im sure the integrated ones work great but it involes alot more work alot more money and they have to take your car apart and you cant exchange it from car to car.
SilverSRT-8 09-26-2006, 12:57 PM I use the Escort ZR-3 Shifter along with the passport 8500. Works like a dream and it has saved my ass many times over the 3 years I have used their system. It saved me the 1st day I had it installed on my SRT. Love IT:D

I have had the V1 now for 8 years. And it has saved my ass many times. I like to drive the way a Jeep SRT8 should be driven. FAST. So any help possible, V1, with it's arrows works for me, especially for the price. I can't see paying over a K for a radar detector. JMHO.
Whats the big deal with the arrows? If im getting lit up from KA I don't care where it's from, I slow down.
MatFab 09-26-2006, 04:24 PM Whats the big deal with the arrows? If im getting lit up from KA I don't care where it's from, I slow down.
u know whether to speed up or not.. i guess.. ha

It's a very big deal once you get used them. You use both the arrows and signal strength meter to determine how to react, how quickly to react, or if you need to react at all. It's hard to explain.
whipple1 09-26-2006, 06:39 PM Have the V1 ,One time I was speeding way over the limit the front arrow lit up as i got closer the beep increased to a steady beep then the side arrow went to the right I looked,a trooper was hideing behind a bush, sneaky bastard, loving the arrows you know exactly where its coming from.
promo718 09-26-2006, 06:41 PM valentine1
palo alto dave 09-26-2006, 08:56 PM I have used a Valentine1 for over 7 yrs. I can remove it and use it in any car,
truck, bike and rental car I'm driving. Check with them, they also offer a remote display I use on my motorcycle. Its very small and easy to hide yet bright at night. They also offer a ear piece for the top down crowd or the motorcycle guys. Great product and service............will save your A$$
CASEY 09-26-2006, 09:00 PM Past 30 years; I have tried them all. Valentine 1.
radduc 09-27-2006, 07:12 AM I am back to square one again.

It works great above the mirror in the Chevy/GMC pictured and it's exactly how I have it in my Chevy truck...too bad the Jeep doesn't lend itself to this placement. Here's the pics of how mine is in the jeep while I try to figure out something "better". I'm really trying to come up with an elegant way to put the mount under the wart behind the mirror...I think it's doable just haven't had time to mess with it lately since my promotion at work (a week after I got the Jeep).

Here's some pics of the stealth Passport Mount in my SL
If you look closely next to the vent controls you can see two LEDs...the left one is the multicolor SRX LED and the right is the Clifford alarm.

This was the phone speaker but it's an exact match for the SRX stealth kit speaker...so this speaker is wired to the tiny amplifier in the SRX stealth kit speaker box (it's very loud and perfect for a convertible).

SRT-8RAT 09-28-2006, 10:58 AM I Have had a V-1 for 5 years and have got only two speeding tickets.
I speed all day every day.:D
radduc 09-28-2006, 11:08 AM How is the V1 with laser, and does it have the deflector?
lincoln 09-28-2006, 10:03 PM The V1 has a laser detector and laser detectors are USELESS!!! You must have a jammer to effectively keep from getting ticketed by laser...not saying the V1 won't save you occassionally on laser but you can't rely on it (or any other laser detector). Jammer jammer jammer!!! They are only illegal in a few states (like Oklahoma) where radar jammers are illegal at the federal level (FCC regs - all 50 states). I use both a Lidatek (on my truck) and Passport brand (on the SL)...the Jeep is getting the Passport b/c it works and it's better value then Lidatek, K40 or Blinder. Hopefully will have it on the Jeep by late next week...
MatFab 09-28-2006, 10:30 PM http://www.torquenstein.net/technology.htm
i think the jeeps need all those systems in action..
Srt8jkt 09-28-2006, 11:26 PM I use the Blinder M-40...so far, so good. All 4 diffusers in the front. You guys should get a group buy going. As far as I know this is effective on all U.S. lasers.
DCXRJE 09-29-2006, 06:16 AM V-1 SUCKS, 6 Tickets in 3 years of use, 4 Laser (it beeps "YOUR SCREWED") and 2 while the cop was driving right at me, no beeps on those. Thankfully i got out of 3 Lasers, and 1 non laser. 1 Laser stuck on the highway but I just got a ticket Saturday. I hate my V-1. Looking for a good Jammer, I don't care how hard it is to transfer from car to car.
srt-8-inferno 09-29-2006, 06:47 AM ok, here is a web site that a friend of mine stumbled across. Haven't really checked it out fully but seems on-line to what people could be looking for.
