: Rear Diff Whine

FYI, I have virtually eliminated all the rear differential whine by replacing the oem diff fluid with 75w-140,full synthetic MOBIL 1. However, the transfer case whine[moan-howl](with traction control off) still persists at 30-45mph. I have searched all dcx tsb's and found nothing. It seems to be transfer case clutch modulation, but I could be wrong. HAS ANYONE SEEN A TSB REFERRING TO THIS?

SRT8, Could not be completely sure about the oem being synthetic or not,But I don't think so. I could not find any definite info claiming either form. So I opted to change to full synthetic and It seems to help the rear noise.....Somewhere on the blue site this was discussed a while back and some claimed it helped.

I thought I read in the owners manual that we were to use synthetic, but that doesn't mean they came w/it. What is the url to the blue site? Thanks.

I have the same rear diff whine. I was going to replace my diff fluid with Mobil 1 75w-140w, but I read in the owners manual that synthetic fluid was recommended. So, I thought that the Jeep already had it and I decided not to change the fluid. Based on your comments, I think I'll give it a try.

How hard was it to change, and what was the fluid capacity of the rear diff? I changed the tranny lube in my MR2 once, so I figure I can handle this, if no special tools are required. Do you have to take the rear diff cover off to drain the fluid? Thanks in advance.

Juggernaught, Without sounding like "Two Guys Garage", changing the rear differential fluid is a straight forward procedure, I think you can handle it. If you have questions PM me and I will see what I can do.:)

It's very hard to believe that changing the gear oil fixed your rear whine noise aspecially if it was really loud. Once the ring and pinion wear a pattern there's no stopping the noise. I took my truck into Jeep they replace the ring and pinion and reset the rear up it was way out from the factory. They did a great job and it's as quiet as a church mouse.

I am glad that your new ring and pinion solved your problem. For me, I am most happy that switching to a Full Syntehtic solved mine(FOR NOW). OH, believe what you want.:D

my rear diff also wines... however i have what seems like the worst tourque streer, i think my front dif is fried. there are 2 fuses you can pull to make the truck sompletely 2wd wich i have done... i recently put 22's on it and i am hoping that i did not mess it up with them... i am going to the dealer in a few days... has anyone else hand a front end prob? mine pulls hard to the right around 4000rpm

True torque steer has the tendency to go left, left fr pulling and right r pushing, they are single leg diffs(just turned around on the front). Tire size changes should be made while keeping the overall tire diameter the same (29.1 inch) or very very close. The whole e-diff, speedo, torque management, rpm calibrations which effects many sytems are dependent on that measurement. Hope things turn out allright for ya at the dealer.

are the tires the same diameter front and rear?

Essentially yes. A fraction of an inch different.

Dropped mine off for service this morning for numerous things. I told them their tech would be happy cuz he gets to take it for a test drive and hear this noise.

I know this is an old topic but I was curious if rear diff or front diff whine is a issue. I didnt want to start a new topic.

Between the rear diff. whine and the transfer case noise these rigs are enough to drive you to drink.

Well I already got drove to drinking because of my 12 bolt with 4.11 gears in my Formula. I wish there was one locally I could drive to see what its like.

Yes, please ride in one. You will definately like it. However, I have had three (3) of them and they all had the rear end whine and the transfer case noise.:( Product of design I guess.

I have a ride set up tomorrow with a member here. As long as the rear end whine is better than my 12 bolt in my Formula I think Ill be fine....

Fluid change works, but only for a while. Your whine will be back... I did same thing about 3 months back and whine all but disappeared. After about 3k miles, gradual sound increases. After 5 k miles, back to square 1.

just called dealership after i found TSB 21-005-06 regarding 2006 GCSRT8 growling/grinding/low frequesncy whine sound when accelerating (louder with esp off) .. . .

seems like just a flash update . . he is going to have them apply this update and also check xfer case for problems.
