Hey guys,

The 2008 GC has a different filter size from previous Mopars - it has 22mm threads! The Fram PH16 (or equivalent) is no longer used. Why change? I have no idea, but they did. I found this out the hard way today when trying to perform the first service. I went to O'Reilly Auto Parts and the computer brought up the same size as previous Mopars. I got home to figure out it was wrong.

Here are the filters which have been found to fit. Let me know as you guys find new ones, and I'll update the list.

Of course, the OEM filter is Mopar p/n 04884899AB.

....Wix 51372....

I just looked this one up out of curiosity, and it does indeed have the same threads. However, Wix does not list any Mopar applications. Odd.

The trick here, guys, in case you hadn't noticed, is that Ford V8 applications have used this filter size for some years. The Ford filter is the Motorcraft FL-820S which is physically very similar to the Mopar MO-899 (a.k.a. 04884899AB). Most of these are cross-references to the FL-820S and several (e.g. the Fram and Mobil filters) have also started to cross-reference to the Mopar.

BTW, my personal plan is to continue to buy the Mopar filter as long as the Jeep is under warranty, and then switch to the Motorcraft FL-820S. The Motorcraft is well built (I have taken one apart), easily available and inexpensive, and that way I can stock one filter for 2 applications (we also have an Expedition that uses this filter).

The FL820 S is a great filter for may reasons. One of the biggest is the bypass valve location:

Locating the bypass valve at the base end of the filter is desirable. For a filter with a dome end relief valve, when the valve is open, oil passes over the dirty side of the filter and then through the valve. This may result in the oil picking up contaminants from the dirty side of the filter and carrying them back into the engine. The FL-820S design is at the base end of the filter. For this filter, when the relief valve is in operation, oil flows directly from the filter intake to the filter outlet without passing over the dirty side of the media. ------ Stolen from another site that I am a member of.

The FL820 S is one of the only filters that places the bypass valve on the correct side.

I personally use this filter on my 32V Ford 4.6 that get's the snot beat out of it on track days.

Hahaha - When you posted all of those alternatives, I did a little more research and picked up on the trend. :D

9000 miles - 7 qts Royal Purple 0W-40 and a Motorcraft FL-820S filter. Approximately $55 for parts (O'Reilly) and $25 for labor (Henderson Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep). They gave me 5000 miles for my next oil change interval. Woo-hoo!
