Tonight coming home from hockey practice, bags, sticks and all. A m3 comes flying onto freeway. I catch up to him but there are cars in the way but not for long. At about 75 he nails it and so do I. By 100 I am catching him, by 120 I am along side him, by 130 I am past him. What a rush, I own a 04 m3 with a manual and I did not think the jeep could hang on the freeway, I guess I was wrong.

Not that I am doubting you, man, but just wondering? Did you stop and look in this guys car or are you saying that at 100mph, (even though you sit higher) you could, and did look over and saw that little SMG knob, or his fingers on the paddles? In other words, how did you know it was an SMG? He might have been in wrong gear too. You know how our M's don't hit power ban til higher RPMs. He should have been in third at 75, slam it to 4th about 100 and ride 4th to about 139...assuming all shifts about 8000 RPMs. Still leaves two gears.

Not busting, nice kill, just wondering.....

I am not calling you a liar, I believe it happened just as you said. But we need more details.

I have a 2001 M3 stick. From a dead stop I can closely beat my superbike racing buddy when he is driving my M3. From a rolling stop I get him early but he hangs even later, (lots of power in the upper band of the M3). On the twisties he runs me off the road.

I have posted an M3 kill as well. A friend has an 06 M3 manual that he has modified with intake, exhaust, pulleys and Tuning. We ran a few times and he NEVER beat me. I would get him out of the hole and we were dead even when rolling. Same story every run.

Ain't doubting you either...but to me your post is not clear....Hole shot. definitely you will squat, go and maybe pull him a bit. But if he has any experience using launch control in S6, DSC off, and keeps it in a straight line, it is going to be really close.....but if you were dead even on a roll, how is that a kill? And to what speed?

I tend to believe it. From what I hear, the GC SRT (I have an '07 on order) will beat a stock Lightning. I have an '02 Lightning (4600lbs) that is slightly modded (near 400hp at the wheels) and have DESTROYED my friend's '05 M3. It wasn't even close. I would think a GC SRT would have it over on an M3. Close? I doubt it. Just my $0.02.

smg has rear parking dots on the bumper, and his plate frame said smg. like I said I own a 04 m3 with a manual and I can beat my friends smg all day long, not by much but every time. Launch control helps a little but not that much. I have ran my jeep with my wife driving and from a dead stop chirping the tires for the first 20 feet the jeep kills it. Who in thier right mind is going to let a mid size fishing boat go pass them at 130 and say oh I was not racing you. Also the sweet spot in the jeep is about 80 mph. My m3 does not have much of a sweet spot and I really dont think its all that fast.

Whatever you say...just all of our opinions, right?....And if you say your M3 doesn't have much of a sweet spot, you should look into where the power band starts. Also...FYI "parking dots on bumper" ? Those are the parking/reverse assist sensors same as Jeep...nothing to do with SMG.

Kind of sounds like your friend might need some practice using launch mode, (not burnout) and feathering it up to 1800 rpms for clutch dump.

But, its all in fun right? Main thing here is how this brick does what it does, and can stay right on M3's bumper in the twisties with an average driver. And believe me it can get real close. Been there, done that at Deal's Gap, Tail of the Dragon in TN. 318 curves in 11 miles.....Lot's of fun, love this Jeep.

All I can say is that I don't miss either of my M3's or the M5 :) I love this Jeep!!!

Also, here's a measure I use. Just outside of my neighborhood is a stop light. About a 1/4 mile(not sure, I have never measured it) there is an overpass. From a very non-scientific standpoint, from this light (stopped) my stick M3 hits the overpass ABOUT 105 at 75 degrees. Under the same conditions my Jeep hits it about 112. This is all rough but outlines how closely matched both of these great cars are.

FYI I know what they are and they only come with the smg package, they are not available on the manual (mfr code 508 rear parking distance control which requires smg)

I LOVE MY JEEP:D

yeah, I dont worry about the M3 s anymore. I used to whip them in the 408 stroker in my old jeep and whip them in the srt8. But, amg has my respect.
I get smacked by an E55 any day of the week. NOt smacked per se, but I ll beat them till 40 then they pull. To be beat "any AMG" you must be doing something different. The fastest car I have ever been in was a modded SL65 which ran low 11s. AMG and M are two different monsters, do confuse them

Rear park distance control on the M3 does "not" require SMG.

My buddy had a 6spd with it and I have an 04 with a 6spd and opted not to get it.

Its included with SMG, optional with the 6spd.

I stand corrected. The guy I raced plate frame said smg that is how I knew. I cant wait to get rid of my m3 it is a $60,000 piece of crap.

Great kill! I can also vouch for the Jeep pulling on the M3 and lightnings. I have beaten both, 2 M3's, 2 Lightnings, all from 50+mph and up. Although the M3's did put up more of a fight on the high end. I had a modded lightning a few years back (430rwhp) and it straight up fell on it's face on top end runs........The Jeep definitely has some more top end pull then I was expecting, atleast for an SUV....

I Had one of the first,2001 m3 cars to come out in new york paid $5000 over book, biggest disapointment and mistake I could make,Tryed to teach myself to like it made me sick every time I drove it,got rid of it in 6 months.Im pretty sure when I was 5 my Bigwheel had more torque.

Whipple - I concur, I can watch my son skate up and down the ice and he makes more torque than my POC 04 M3, paid $1K under MSRP and still was too much. She is a pretty car to look at does not mean she is smart or fast.

I enjoy reading these threads! I don't get opps like a lot of you it seems. I get a thrill in the mornings sometimes when the 2-lane on-ramp lights go at the same time, and I'm in this concrete like tunnel. The sound is just awesome with a wot! Then the slowdown for traffic merge. I did have the occasion to sport a launch against an SMG 55 suv (that square looking toaster thing) at a stop light, and blew his expensive butter out his windows!

On another occasion, of which I wasn't paying attention to, an M3 blew my doors off on a 2-lane left hand turn at a light. She even shook her hand in air in victory. If I had only known that I was supposed to be racing her... Give me a clue people, it's not like it's a given every time duh! Friggin cheaters.

If you want to cheat, then I'll load you up with my biggest funny trick from my bag.
You set up next to somebody and rev it good you know. Check the traffic and make sure no people or cars are in the green lanes (from the road you have to cross). Watch the other person. If the other person is watching you and looking at your vehicle, then LAUNCH! BUT STOP just after the crosswalk or beginning of the intersection with them great Brembos! Most likely the other driver will launch all the way through the RED light. I enjoy a good laugh :D

Srt8 that would be a AMG 55, and never let a chick in a m3 catch you off gaurd. Next time race her for pinks. And some money.

The E46 M3 is done and out of production, look for the E92 M3 V8 to hit the market in about 15 months or so.

My '02 M3 'Vert is a wonderful automobile. It is fun to drive, handles superbly, is fast & one of the best looking automobiles ever built. A 3,500 car with a 195 CI engine that makes its max HP @ 7,900 rpm is not going to be a low end torque monster, duh. The 3.2 Inline 6 in the M3 produces over 100 HP/Liter, our 6.1 would have to put out 635 HP to meet these #'s. There's a reason the E46 M3 has been universally acclaimed as one of the finest automobiles ever built, it's because it is. My GC SRT8 is quicker off the line and a superior performer in almost any acceleration contest, but that doesn't detract from the acheivements of my M3 at all. In the end the M3 is about a balance of; performance, luxury, & fun, I never get out of my M3 or my GC SRT8 that I don't have a smile on my face. And they are the only 2 vehicles I've ever owned, including several Porsches, BMWs, MBs, Hummer, etc, that I always look back at when I park them & walk away because they both just look RIGHT.

Not true. The PDC was always available as a standalone option for the manual...it was included/forced with the SMG. This might have changed recently, but 01-04 definitely had it standalone. I didn't opt for it on my 01, not worth the $400-600 price tag IMHO. I had front and rear on the my M5 and found it annoying as hell...it's just as annoying on the Jeep.

I miss the M5 (it was the nicest car I've owned and fine, fine machine just didn't fit my needs) and the E36 M3, but don't really miss the E46 M3 and really disliked the CLK55 (sold it after 5 months). The car I miss most of all of them I've owned was my first BMW...an 84 euro-spec 323i, it had the stripped down interior of a base 318 with 35 more hp then the US spec 325e...it also weighed hundreds of lbs less then it's comparable 325. What a great autocrosser, rat racer!!! Damn, high school was fun :)

I raced my friend, who happens to be a superbike racer, while he was driving my M3 and I was driving the GC.
