Drove my wife's SRT8 which was purchased used with 1200 miles, and on some bumps on the road, there is a signficant clunk from the rear end. Anyone else experience this, or do I have a problem?

Yes, I get that right after you fire up the motor, put it in drive, and then take off. The dealer looked at it and couldn't find anything wrong with it. They tell me it is the rear suspension making the noise, but I don't believe that.

I get the noise when the transmission is shifting from 1st to 2nd. Only when the vehicle has started or the first couple of shifts from 1st to 2nd.

I believe the "clunk" between 1 & 2 after start up is the ABS system test that is talked about in the owners manual. This was talk about a few months back on this very board. Check your manual and read up on ABS, and you should fined what I am talking about.

I'll later on as well.

Well, the t-case makes a clunk when it runs a self test around the 2-3 shift. It is a one time thing. If you are talking about a clunk happening over bumps, potholes, quick throttle stabs, and breaking then, I have it too. The dealer did a rotten job on finding the problem, basically attributing it to the source of a squeak I also had. Unfortunately that is not the case, and the clunk/banging is still present. I think a crossmember or the exhaust is slightly loose and "moves" under the right circumstances.

Sounds like you have the same problem as I have. I haven't taken it in yet, and don't know if I even want to try (how sad is that!).

I hope to get mine in to a different dealer soon. Basically I am going to insist that they get it on a lift and do a thorough inspection to find what is clunking. For as much as it does it, there should be witness marks on whatever is getting hit by now. Keep your eyes open, and I will report the findings once I get it in.

LOL.... They have the exact same problem with the SRT4's :) I have had a clunk in mine for quite some time.

My GC SRT8 also has an occasional "clunk" in the rear end. I believe it is due to the driveline lash in the rear differential. I had the same thing in my '02 T/A and just learned to live with it. It's annoying but doesn't seem to hurt anything. I do have a whine in my rear diff between 55-65 mph that may be related to the excessive lash. If the dealer ever gives me a new ring and pinion which is set up properly, it should alleviate this problem somewhat.

I also have the clunk between 1st and 2nd shift and am incline to beleive the ABS test theory...the dealer was unable to duplicate it and I did not have it figured out at that time. Since, I've narrowed it to my first drive off, but if my drive is short and I tarry somewhere (15mins or so) it could occur a 2nd time. Also, on hard accellerations it's not there...or less noticed.

Thanks for all the info.

I had the same problem and took mine to the local dealer and they narrowed it down to the differential. They also ordered a new drive shaft and shaft joints to replace my originals. I had both the "clunk" and a grinding noise coming from mine. Both regulators in the driver and passenger windows where replaced along with my steering wheel.

I forgot to add they replace my differential as well.

Ok.. I'm awake know and I'll correct myself. It was my T-case that was replaced not my differential. Shows how much I know what I'm talking about.

I had the exact same problem that you guys are experiencing in my 07 GC SRT8. It was a one time deal only after being put in park and once it did the "clunk" it wouldn't do it again until I put it back into park or turned it off. It would happen on or before the shift depending on the throttle position and RPM's to the 1-2 shift between 17-27 mph aprox, would also do it if I put it in autostick to 3rd before 20 mph. Wasn't noticable or as noticable at WOT. I had it to the dealer multiple times, they said they did an update and reflashed something but it never went away. So I went to a different dealer and the mechanic said there was a TSB on it and it involved reflashing something. I said they already did it but he said nothing had been done or updated so he did it and it went totally away. So make sure your dealer actually does the reflash.

I was wondering what this clunk was today... It only seems to happen right after I start driving (which is what I read so far) Can you guys feel this clunk through the pedals? I just want to make sure I'm feeling the same thing.
