: Cheapest gas you ever bought
bridam 01-18-2008, 11:46 PM As I was staring at my gas guzzler, I suddenly thought back to the good old days of $.93 per gallon. What's the cheapest gas you can remember buying?
To some of you old farts on here, don't get shy.

phenwick 01-19-2008, 12:07 AM 34 cents. Go here and enter the year (upper right) your first bought gas. (http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/)
OurZoo 01-19-2008, 12:40 AM I don't remember myself. According to that site the avg price of gas was $1.68 when I began driving at 16. That's scary.
ResumeSpeed 01-19-2008, 03:22 AM .23 a gallon. On my wages of $1.05 an hour, it took almost a half a day's pay to fill up my '56 Chevy. It would take about $17.00/hr today to be "equal" to that on the SRT8.
hoops7k 01-19-2008, 03:32 AM Funny question because I asked my grandmother this question a couple of months ago. She told me 12 cents.
larryc7777 01-19-2008, 04:27 AM I remember 19 cents a gallon for leaded premium during the "gas wars" of the late 60s & 70s.

$.29 for premium (used to call it ethyl) at the 76 station. Used to cost me around $5 to fill up a 69 RoadRunner 440 But, that was a lot of money at the time.

If gas keeps going up...I will keep driving my GCSRT8...if beer goes up, I will have to cut back on my alcohol consumption...okay, maybe not!!!:p
1BAMFR 01-19-2008, 11:07 AM I used to fill my Mustang up and get a pack of Marlboro Lights for under 20 bucks.

DC SRT8 01-19-2008, 11:23 AM In the 60's when gas went from 25 cents to 27 cents, I thought that the world had gone mad.
That was when McDonalds advertised "Forty-five cents for a three course meal." (Hamburger, fries, and a shake; each 15 cents.)
Street WK 01-19-2008, 11:25 AM $1.46 in 2001.
robpp 01-19-2008, 11:47 AM .59 cents when I worked pumping gas and washing windshields. About 75 cents once I got my license in 1975.
Also I can remember both gas shortages.
1973 I was pumping gas. But not yet driving so it wasn't too much hassle for me.
1979 was a different story. I remember it was like 6 months or more of odd/even gas rationing. We all had our front plates under the front seat and so we could swap them between us whenever we needed to get on line for gas. I also worked at the airport during that winter. Our boss would sell us 100 octane LL, Cessna fuel, for our cars. I had a '66 Lincoln and that 462 never ran soooo good. I can also remember sitting on the side of the LIE looking for a gas truck to follow to its delivery point so we could get some gas.

Yeah. Mad Max on Long Island NY. It was kind of crazy. Hope we never have to deal with that again.
BuilderBill 01-19-2008, 04:49 PM $0.23 per gallon...gas wars in Indiana where I went to college.
I remember talk of a buck a gallon some day!
Back then my major paycheck was $409 per week while working summers at Chevy Engine Plant in Tonawanda!
It took years to make that much as an automotive engineer. Thank goodness for construction.

bridam 01-19-2008, 10:01 PM Remember different prices for credit card purchases? Remeber the first time you paid at the pump?
gregg 01-20-2008, 08:08 AM we had a country store that when the price hit 1.00 you had to give them 5.00 and only pump 2.50 because there pump only had 2 digits for the price on the pump. it was set at .50 so you still got 5 gallons. i guess they never figured it to go above 1.00 a gallon wonder if the new pumps can go above 9.99 a gallon
SRT8ITWHOLE 01-20-2008, 11:17 AM Gregg, don't even say that!
