: New Rims for snow tires
radduc 09-12-2006, 05:02 PM Does anyone know how far down I can go in rim size without interfering with the brakes? I would like to put on a set of 18 or 19 inch rims with some heavy duty snow tires for the winter.Any help would be appreciated. Also if anyone has knowledge on a good set of snow tires as well
Ditto. I'm also interested in buying a factory set of wheels if anyone doesn't want thiers. Anyone?
TRAINER 09-12-2006, 06:05 PM This is ironic. For the past week I have been on a mission to find rims for our Jeep. I've literally contacted companies from Canada to Florida to Calli. As we all know the brakes make this, what should be a simple process, a major pain in the ass. From past experience with my Infiniti FX, 18's are the way to go for best performance in the snow, so 20's aren't an option for me.
This is what I found out. Thre are many rims in 18x8, 5x5 (bolt pattern) and with an offest of 25, 30 or even 40. The "book" calls for an offest of 35-42 in order to clear the brakes. Most of the rims are waaay too "bling" for my taste and or are chrome. For me, these will be December 1st - April 1st rims and tires only. They will be beat to crap from rock salt and so on. I put 500 miles on my car a week and live in a very hilly area so these tires must work for me.
I'm still working on finding the right rim. I plan on putting Blizzak LM-22's in 255/55 18 all around.
I will keep you posted once I find that "perfect" non bling rim. But again, yes, there are rims out there if you like that sort of thing.
radduc 09-13-2006, 08:09 AM TRAINER, you and I are in the exact same boat. I want as far a Blingless as I could get.I saw a few sets of Black rims at the Tire rack. The rims are only like two hundred and something.I will try to post them.I am also intrested in the tires you mentioned Blizzak. From what I have heard they are the best.I will get a few set's together and post them if I can.
TRAINER 09-13-2006, 09:30 AM I contacted Tirerack and their research team concluded that they don't sell any that will fit our Jeep. I'm curious as to what you found.
radduc 09-13-2006, 09:34 AM UGH!!!! Will let you know
8 is my lucky number 09-13-2006, 10:08 AM I'm waiting delivery of an 07 and am also in need of a good set of snows/rims (living in the great white north). My local supply guy up here says the only thing that will fit are 19" Pirelli Scorpion snow & Ice - 255/50 VR 19. No way to confirm if these will work or not but thought folks might be interested. Personally I'm not a huge fan of Pirelli's largely due to the mega bucks needed to pick them up ... hoping someone on the forum can save me from italian rubber !
TRAINER 09-13-2006, 10:21 AM 19" on a stock wheel you're talking about? Not sure it that would be a great idea.
Im very interested in this as well. Someone said that there is an 18" that fits over the Charger SRT8 brakes but then someone questioned whether the offsets were the same. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
8 is my lucky number 09-13-2006, 10:33 AM My thoughts exactly ... I'm no fan of anything low profile for the winter, would much rather have the ice/salt/sand etc grind against rubber than metal. Also, not sure Pirelli ever assumed their stuff would fit on anything stock. There must be another alternative.
idealrides 09-13-2006, 10:53 AM just an idea, if you had to go with cheesy bling wheels and you really hate the look of cheesy bling wheels you could just paint them bodycolor. But why not just get some 20" snow tires?

TRAINER 09-13-2006, 01:37 PM 20" snows don't do well in the snow when compared to 18's plus the rock salt would not be great for our stock rims.

I know exactly what you're talking about. That rim on that charger is the TSW Montage, the offest is right and would clear our brakes however it DOES NOT come in our bolt pattern..
Does TireRack actually sell wheels that will fit anything.... besides a Civic? :)
zen garage 09-13-2006, 05:32 PM damn trainer you have been busy. sorry i did not get back to you re the wheels, but it appears you found your answer. i have been slipping in all this wet lately and definitely need some new rubber for the winter.

Ah damn, they look pretty nice too. Is there anything like a bolt pattern adapter/converter kit or something to make them fit?
edit: looks as if such a thing exists:

Do you know the bolt pattern of our grands and on those TSWs that fit the charger? I can try and see if a kit is made in those sizes.
edit 2: damn looks like they change the offset...ugh
idealrides 09-13-2006, 09:02 PM those adaptors/spacers aren't even hubcentric.... skip!

Cochise 09-13-2006, 09:25 PM I am going to put Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow 255/45VR20 fronts 275/45VR20 rears. People are putting them on the Range Rover Sport with 20's. I think these tires will do well with the amount of snow we get here at the Indiana and Michigan border.
idealrides 09-13-2006, 09:33 PM cochise, those 275 rear tires would be about 3/4" taller than the fronts, it would be better to find sizes that are a closer match to each other.

I wasn't referring to those specifically, just that there is in fact such a thing. With enough searching we might be able to find something that will allow an 18" wheel to work.
TRAINER 09-14-2006, 04:24 AM I question the strength of a spacer with 420+ hp at WOT - Although they do claim that the wheel would break before the spacer...,,, hhhmmmmm
ronald mcglothlin 09-22-2006, 03:46 PM I think I have found the snow tire. TireRack has a Pirelli Scorpion Ice & snow tire same size our frount ones. Then wheeles from buy wheels today .com a little expensive but should wook well.

Come again?
They don't seem too pricey.

dubdub 09-23-2006, 12:10 PM What up guys. This is my first time chiming in on the wealth of info you guys toss around. Your spirited conversation has really kept me in head of the learning curve as it applies to the JC SRT8. Thanx alot in advance. I'm in western NY and own an '06 GC SRT8. I'm not looking forward to driving this winter on the all season run flats on our jeeps. So I have also been checking into winter tire/rim combos. Here's my 2 cents.... Beware - the bolt pattern is specifically 5x127mm. Any other measurement will probably not fit or give you fittment trouble at least. SRT8's recommended site for rim selection was pretty thorough, showing several choices with the correct measurements - to my surprise. Not too much bling...but what can you expect for a 20" rim. I personally plan on going with after market 20's on 255/45/20 Pirelli Scorpions on front and rear. The search for rims becomes a little bit harder when you factor in down sizing the rim. Hope this info helps.
red_rides 09-23-2006, 12:37 PM dubdub - what's the url for "SRT8's recommended site for rim selection"?

You want to sell your factory set after you get the new wheels? :)
dubdub 09-25-2006, 07:20 AM red rides - SRT8's site is buywheelstoday.com. Sorry, I'm not very computer savy. I should probably get my 7 year old to show me how to post it. :)
SRT8 - I'm gonna use the new ones for dedicated winter use. Thanx.
TRAINER 09-25-2006, 09:03 AM That site has no rims for our car.

this is what I am doing cuz my tire shop tried the spacers and the 17' rims and the rim cleared the brembos fine .
red rides - SRT8's site is buywheelstoday.com......
......... LOL that is rich, coming from a guy who's screen name is DubDub, and you're sending folks to a wheel site.
There are wheels that will fit our app there, all part of the TSW family, from what I saw. Dubdub, you must know Ryan Gallagher from TSW?

They test fitted them on the front? 17" simply can't fit. We need visual confirmation..
radduc 09-26-2006, 10:00 AM Must Have Pics!!!
dubdub 09-26-2006, 10:25 PM Still searching for rims.....
Trainer, I got a question for you as you seem to be up to speed on offsets, bolt patterns and all that.
I found a relatively 'blingless' rim at wheelmax.com. It's the 'Excel 018' - 20x9. Check it out for yourselves if you're on on the same path I'm on. Anyway, it has an off set of 20mm - not 35mm like our stock fronts. The difference is just over a 1/2 inch. Do you think it will clear the brakes? I'm speculating that any rim that fits the front will also fit the rear because the front brakes are bigger.
Just looking for feedback.
akatheproducer 09-27-2006, 12:51 AM what ever !!!!!! i know what i saw , im not blind they cleared the brembos fine besides how can you talk like you know , if they will fit or not when im the one who has tried them on ! as for the pics i guaranty i will snap some the day i put them on which is going to be absolute first day of snow
radduc 09-27-2006, 07:16 AM  Want to see them sooner as I need to buy Wheels and tires for the first snow fall as well.
TRAINER 09-27-2006, 08:59 AM DUB: The OEM offset calls for 35-42. Unless you use a spacer that 20mm won't fit.
AKA: Take a deep breath... Perhaps you should have taken a photo when they were on considering there are people all around the country that are looking for what you discovered.
Considering the brakes are 1 1/8 inch from the inside of the wheel from its longest point, I just find it hard to understand how a 17" would fit. The spacer only helps with the offest, not the diameter - help us out and make us understand..
autoidiot 11-25-2006, 11:53 PM I am going to put Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow 255/45VR20 fronts 275/45VR20 rears. People are putting them on the Range Rover Sport with 20's. I think these tires will do well with the amount of snow we get here at the Indiana and Michigan border.
I live in Granger. 07 Red GCSRT8, got it from Tyler in Niles, how about you? Couldn;t find any 255/45's, went with 275/40 on all 4, what did you end up doing?
docmartin 11-26-2006, 07:54 AM The only proven solutions are Pirelli Ice and Snow, same size all around, on the stock rims. 255/45/20's if you can find them, otherwise 275/40/20's.
Next year you will probably be able to match the stock tire sizes, but that isn't going to help us get through this winter.
SilverSRT-8 11-26-2006, 03:11 PM I am using Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow 255/45VR20 on all 4 corners as I have posted pictures on a different thread. I have had them on for about 3 weeks. Works great, we have snow and -22 Celsius at the moment......I have driven over 100km today alone with a jeep liberty spinning out right in front of me and smashed into the guard rail.........This seems to be the only solution that I found feasible and reasonably priced.
