: Does anyone know what "Variance" is? Any other hidden menus?
stang 01-16-2008, 10:48 PM Today my CHSRT8 buddy said to hold the music note and my temperature button for a few seconds to get a hidden menu. I have an 07, and once I figured out the music note was the equivalent of the mode button on the nav, I tried it. I got one option that I can't scroll away from called Variance, and I can set it to a number between 1 and 15. It was on 8 so I just left it there until I can figure out what the hell it is.
Anyone seen this or know what it is? Are there any other hard to find menus?
maxxjeep 01-16-2008, 11:12 PM temperature button?
OurZoo 01-16-2008, 11:13 PM What buttons did you push? Hmmmmmmmmmmm.
stang 01-16-2008, 11:16 PM yeah, the Compass/Temperature (C/T) and mode.
maxxjeep 01-16-2008, 11:18 PM ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhh
hmm

Probably magnetic variance to set the compass readout
Matt McKenzie 01-17-2008, 05:04 AM Probably magnetic variance to set the compass readout
That actually makes a lot of sense.....would that be like calibrating the compass?

Yep depending on where in the world you are Magnetic North changes
Matt McKenzie 01-17-2008, 05:34 AM Yep depending on where in the world you are Magnetic North changes
Yeah, I know about magnetic North...and now you got me thinking. This could be the difference in the angles between grid North and magnetic North...what we in the Military call the GM angle....if you know the angle, you can probably adjust it to help out the accuracy of the NAV system.
stang 01-17-2008, 06:06 AM oh, that makes sense, you set the degree of variance. cool.
navyavi469 01-17-2008, 06:11 AM "Mag Var"!!! (Magnetic Variance), the differential between magnetic North and True North. Not only does the magnetic variance differ by degrees of declination, the lines of force have inclination as well, and go "through" the earth, not straight down it like likes of longitude. The rule of thumb is:
When going from True to Magnetic "East is Least and West is Best", thus subtract for East Variance and Add for West Variance that you can find on a map. When going from Magnetic to True, do the opposite.
As of Today, the magnetic variance in Pheonix, AZ is 11 degrees, 21 minutes east. It changes a few minutes each year.
You can go here to figure it out. http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/seg/geomag/jsp/struts/IgrfWmmLocationSwitch;jsessionid=15B9D372236EBA2C1 1951FFBA39E09BF

Matt McKenzie 01-17-2008, 06:51 AM This would also explain why when I turn down a road, that slowly moves away from the original road I was on...the NAV system doesn't catch it for awhile and thinks I am still on the other road.....any thoughts?!?!?!

You pilot type guys :p
Actually I read somewhere that the Magnetic North will be in Russia by 2025 or something like that I'm glad I have GPS in my plane ( I got one of those compass thingys but who uses those)
Matt McKenzie 01-17-2008, 02:40 PM Us Infantry guys walking on the ground still use em!!!!
