Can this be done by the owner, or does it have to be reset using a special tool at a dealer?

Hit the menu button, go to service intervals, and it allows you to reset it.

When it says perform service you hit the Step button until it says 0 miles to service. Then hold the reset button down until it says 3,000 miles to service or whatever interval you have it set for. The menu button takes you to where you can change the interval, but that is how you reset it when its due.
