I have a silver '07 GC SRT8 on order and I am wondering if anyone has a Passport SR7 plus shifter built in radar detector installed. Where would you install it?

I have the SRX on my SL500 but use a Valentine 1 in my Jeep. I'm getting a ZR3 shifter for the Jeep but it's been installed yet. I plan to have the front sensors mounted to the top of the lower grill opening and the rear sensor will NOT be mounted to the license plate frame because it can't be mounted to the top plate holes b/c it will block access to the open handle for the rear door and it would be very ugly mounted to the bottom holes. It fits nicely mounted in the space next to the top of the plate off to the drivers side. I will take pics once I get it put on (probably within the next 2 weeks). You should consider the SRX over the SR7 since it's based on newer technology.

got the new K40 Calibre w/ shifter put in. the receptors are bluetooth and there's a remote to change settings. point is they don't have to drill thru the fire wall. i had a local shop that does everything wheels/mods etc...do the install.

oh yeah...i had the front radar sensor mounted behind the radiator grill and the rear in the bumper. the laser shifter is attached to the bottom of the front liscense plate frame. the tech said to put it there for best performance given that the laser is aimed and bounces off the lis. plate.

The passport has dual front sensors so license plate mounting on front is not an option for that system. What are you doing with a front plate anyway???

BTW: You don't typically drill holes in the firewall to run wires. You use an existing hole/grommet.

Would you need two seperate controlers with the srx? Why is it better?

I just signed a deal to be a distributor for the k40 calibre. I will be installing one in the jeep and one in my vipe. nice looking product. 5 wires opposed to 22 for the older models

I have had the K40 in all my cars for the last 10 years with the exception of the last 3 years.I have gone to Valentine and the pasport x50 or something like that. How are the new K40's and how do they stand up to the 2 detectors I mentioned?

I have lived by the arrows for several years now and do love it. However I would like a concealed unit, especially in the vipe. All the reviews give a thumbs up to the k40. I will not have a real world taste of the calibre for a few weeks

As someone who currently uses a V1 and something else that is very good (Passport SRX), they both do their job but once you've gotten used to the Valentine's arrows you feel lost using any other.

K40 has a following that swears by them and they do work and have good range when properly installed (some installs, optimal is not possible but I doubt that would be a problem on the Jeep). As an ex-K40 installer and one time owner, I am not one of the followers.

That was a hint guys. I get really good prices. If you are not in my area you will need to install them yourselves but with the bluetooth it should be easy

MABOSC223, you can call K-40 and ask for a recommended installer in your area, and have front & rear, and front diffuser installed for under $1,200. Or if you can DIY, bluetooth probably makes it the easiest remote install on the market. Plus you can't beat their policy on reimbursements if you do get a ticket.

I'm 99% sure that if you don't have an authorized dealer install your K40 that it was no warranty. Otherwise its 3-years and pretty much covers anything on the system. I don't recommend a DIY on this for that reason alone since it's a fairly expensive system. I too get them and just about any other brand (except Valentine) at dealer cost, yet I still pay full price to have a V1 :). Personally, I think the Passport SRX system is a better system then the K40 and they are competitively priced to the K40 system.

Also, the ticket payment only works if pay the ticket, if you want to fight the ticket or live in a county that has ticket-fixer attorneys then K40 will not pay anything toward that.

The Passport SRX is just a box that contains the SR7 system along with the ZR3 shifters. If you have an SR7 you can buy the ZR3 shifters and they plug into the SR7 module, then you have the equivalent of an SRX. It's just marketing, not all Passport dealers can sell the SRX.

The SRX system (or SR7+ZR3) includes a front radar sensor which you can hide behind the grill, as well as two front laser sensors/jammers that can be tucked away in an opening but not blocked. There is also a rear laser sensor/jammer designed to screw onto the rear license plate but you can put it whereever you want, the closer to the plate the better. As lincoln mentioned, it will block the tailgate handle if you mount it to the plate so mounting it to the left of the handle is a great idea. But this won't work on the 2007 Jeep if you have the optional rearview camera.

Don't forget about the control head, that can be flushmounted as well. For some install pictures check out aviboston.com and click car installs then click radar detectors.

if you change cars every few years you'd be better off going with more portable unit like the Valentine1 or Passport X50. Can't vouch for the new K40's but I know their top of the line stuff from 10 years ago was complete garbage.

That might not be true. Originally the SR7 was based on the Passport 7500 (not a great detector) and the SRX is based on the 8500 (a great detector). Now what I don't know is if Escort changed the SR7 recently to the 8500 technology but I tend to doubt it since they usually change the model number when new technology is introduced to an older (see: 8500 vs 8500 X50). Yes, the SRX is harder to get but you can find them. The SRX is supposed to only be available from new car dealers but it seems any dealer that sells Escort can get them since mine came from the shop I used to work at and they are not a new car dealer and they do stock it. I have the extra cost stealth install kit (external speaker and multicolor LED b/c the control piece is hidden in a compartment in my SL) and I still paid far less then the $1500 asking price (really $1600 with the stealth kit).

A while back the SR7 was updated to SRX internals but you are right, before that the SR7 was the older model. Notice the control heads are now identical and they have a similar price. This info was passed on to me by a Passport dealer that I've known for 13 years. I got mine from him for 800 plus 300 for the install. Could have bought it off ebay for 700 at the time (now they're only 630) but then you have no warranty.

That's good news since they are easier to find. As much as I like the SRX and demanded a remote with stealth for the convertible I still recognize everytime I drive the SL that I miss the V1's that I use in my other vehicles...it's all about the arrows!!!

Valentine 1 hands down the best radar...

There is only one police jammer on the market that actually works,

Its called the scorpion, it cost around 1,500.00 bucks and its the only KA jammer on the market.

i have owned one of those phazer 2 jammers for years and it never worked.

But the V 1 has saved me a bunch of times. they have one of a kind features that no other radar have, its worth kicking up the couple extra hundred.. Won't leave home without mine, plus you can upgrade the unit for ever without having to buy a new one.

I posted some details and tips from my hardwire a few weeks ago. It has more info posted then you need since I included instrutions for running the V1 remote display cable...just ignore that part.
