Hey guys, so about a week ago, I started hearing this whine/growl from the back end. I uploaded 2 clips if you can take a listen and let me know if you have ever had this before and what it was or if not, what it might be. 1 shop told me it's the Ring and Pinion going bad but I beg to differ. I can get the noise to come and go when I lightly accelerate and then let go, that's why you'll hear it and then you won't in the 1st clip Thanks.
IMHO it's definitely gear whine in the first clip. Remember how cars made in the 60's and 70's sounded when you drove in reverse (manual trans.)? Gear whine is caused by micro vibrations as the gears mesh due to minor imperfections caused by wear, design, loading, temperature effects, and manufacturing variations. How bad is it, it it a risk now, will it get worse, .... I have no idea.
Thanks very much for the response. I am going to take it in to a Transmission/Drivetrain place locally, heard good things from others. Will see what the "chatter" is all about. Thanks again.
Mine does the same when you accelerate around 60 mph amd above when you stay at a certain speed it will not make that noise ....oh and also when your lowering your speed like to make a turn ill hear it again
Well, I took it in. The pinion shaft in the Differential Carrier snapped in two, shop says the entire carrier needs to be replaced. $825 from the dealer, but it's on national back order. Won't know until Monday how long it will take.
Ring and Pinion gears are actually in good shape he said.
There are two sides to any gear set. Cost and drive side. Its not uncommon for one side or both to start making noise. This is definitely a gear set problem.
They need to show you the broken pinion shaft, and if they actually "broke" there would have to be corresponding gear damage. Did you notice the sounds starting after an aggressive launch? Some gear teeth would be damaged too if the pinion broke; massive misalignment but with things still rotating. Also, ask/look if the shaft is cracked (a hairline looking feature) or cracked (an actual gap).
I did see it, it was snapped. The spider gears inside of the carrier are damaged. Although what's odd is, he said he can't remove the pinion shaft, it's "stuck" inside...
