I have been scouring the threads here and on other forums and can't seem to find a solid answer. I know the stock air box is pretty good and the really our Jeep SRT's are really well engineered all around, but I did feel a little pep when I have added an intake to all my other vehicles, so naturally I am looking to add one to my 16' SRT.
Given the customer service issues other forum members are seeing, I would like to avoid aFe. I am not against a drop-in, but I am leaning towards the Injen, though I have not ruled out K&N or any other short rams with a heat shield.
Stock air cleaner is fine. Aftermarket will sound louder. Stock intake manifold is fine until you get to something like 550+awhp and then a 6.1 intake will shine. Save the air cleaner mod and get a custom JB tune instead.
I was on the fence for a while as well but decided to go with the afe. The stock box is good but I noticed once it gets hot it takes a very long time to cool down. It also only draws air from the bottom of the engine bay basically.
The afe is a nice unit that fits pretty well. It's not perfect but it seems to cool down faster than the stock box. The air filter is huge and definitely will flow more than the stock filter. Whether or not this makes any extra hp is debatable, but it certainly can't hurt. It also looks very good under the hood which is a bonus.
The SRT seems to have a little better throttle response with the intake on it. Overall I like it and will probably keep it for a while.
The stock airbox is great . You need to remember when the engineers designed this they do everything they can to deliver the most HP and MPG as possible. The only slightly restrictive part of the factory airbox is the paper filter. These they mass produce and saving every penny helps. replacing that with a quality drop in washable filter is a great upgrade for $60 .
I have the Mopar one on mine...sounds great...car seems to really like it...gets cold air from the bottom (same as airbox) and from the front, along with having a heat shield and dry filter. It probably does not add much power, but it looks better, sounds better, and gets cooler air into the engine. This intake keeps the factory tube and factory air inlet that's under the stock box. The only thing that gets replaced is the top of the box.
I have the Injen, it ran 3 degrees colder on the highway at speed than the stock air box did. I'm not sure how quickly the stock air box heated up but with the Injen, if its 85 outside and I am cruising the iat reads about 90 to 95, as soon as I come to a stop at a red light the temp soars back up to 140ish. I've considered wrapping the pipe in header wrap but haven't done it yet.
I have a K&N Drop in air filter. Specifically in humid climates, like Houston, it makes a lot of difference with mid acceleration. For a car with this much power and weight, MPG is not and to be honest, should not be the concern but it helps with MPG as well, for those who wonders. I clean it every 5K to 6K miles, while you do not have to according to manufacturer but I do.
One other thing to mention, with all due respect to the engineers who work for AFE, BWoody etc. and also being someone who is an engineer and have installed both CAI Systems and In Box Drop Filters in the past, unless your intake box or not the box but the filter is in a bad hot spot in the engine bay, a drop in filter will bring in wast majority of the Hp and breathing capability. I am not saying that the CAI or full box replacements are worthless but the gain with a drop in filter compared to a full system will not be that drastic, specifically for an engine that is already putting out 470 Hp.
I just said F' it and ordered the K&N filter for my stock 2015. It arrives Thursday, so I will be sure to capture a couple before/after comparison videos! Stay tuned
