I want to remove the rear "Jeep" emblem (to put a black one on in its place), but I am worried about damaging the paint since it seems to have a back plate. Is there an easy, safe way to remove it?
The back plate comes off with it. It's held on by adhesive so just get a trim tool and pull it off slowly and steadily. It's on there pretty good so you'll need to use some pretty good force.
I thought of that but was afraid the adhesive would come off of the emblem and not the car. Does that happen? Ideally you want to get as much adhesive off the car as possible on the first pull.... cleaning up the leftover adhesive on the Jeep is a beotch.
The adhesive will end up on the old emblem and on the car. It will take some patience to clean. If you are lucky it might also just come of completly..
I just removed several emblems. Use fishing line. Dental floss breaks too easy and will just piss you off. Do it in the sun on a warm day, or use a blow dryer to get it heated up. That is key. Don't even try it if it is cold. Try to get the fishing line flush with the car, not the emblem, in order to get behind the adhesive. If you are lucky most will come off with the emblem. If not, use your fingernails to get the remaining clobs off. Then use Goo Be Gone or Krud Cutter and a buffing rag (not a paper towel!) to get the remaining residue off. You will probably want to wax the area, and the whole car, after doing this.
WD40 is great for getting extra adhesive off of the paint. It won't damage the paint...just let it sit for 30 seconds and gently wipe it. You may have to repeat a few times. Clean the entire area with rubbing alcohol before applying the new emblem. You have to get all of the WD40 off or the new emblems won't stick. I went over it three times with alcohol and they are on there solid!
