What is the "Heavy Duty Engine Cooling" in SRT towing package?

Hello Guys, I hope you can help me. This is my first post as I hope to be joining the JGC SRT community soon.

I'm in the process of purchasing a 2017 Cherokee SRT. Then I realized it does not have the towing package. I've searched online and in the forums and seen that some people simply add the hitch, wiring adapter and bumper cover and start towing. Now, that would be an option for me, but since the towing package includes "Heavy Duty Cooling System", I'm a bit worried. I have not been able to identify what is different on towing package vs non-towing package SRT's. Only saw some speculation, but nothing definite. I even chatted with an SRT specialist on the Jeep website, and he was unable to help. Another option would be to order one with the towing package, but I'm told it would take 3 to 4 months for delivery, as I'm in Puerto Rico.

Could anyone please explain specifically what is modified in the trucks, for this "Heavy Duty" cooling? Would this be something the dealer would be able to add?

I would really appreciate any insight into this option. Thanks in advance for your help!

Best Regards,

JCG

Hello,

I'm new to the forum. I spent a few hours searching for this information and was unable to find anything definitive. It seemed some people were just speculating.

Can someone tell me specifically what is changed in a JGC SRT with the towing package, for the Heavy Duty Cooling? Is it something that can be added by the dealer?

I tried to post a thread asking this question, but for some reason it was not posted.

Thanks!

TRAILER TOW GROUP IV -inc: 7 and 4 Pin Wiring Harness, Delete Rear Tow Hook, Class IV Receiver Hitch, Full Size Spare Tire, Steel Spare Wheel.

I found the above online for a 2014 SRT. Other lesser GC's on the same list showed higher capacity alternators, load leveling rear suspension HD cooling system etc. etc. for their tow packages. Only the items listed above for an SRT. It may be that our SRT's already have the other Trailer tow/high performance items by default. Just a thought. I know that the trailer wiring harness is there, although not activated, as some of you have noted. I just put a hitch on my 2015. All Mopar parts and it was plug and play. Hitch, trailer plug and hitch cover with SRT logo moulded in.........

I spoke to an SRT Customer Service rep today and she explained that the Radiator and Radiator fan are upgraded and that their is a tranny oil cooler, included in the Heavy Duty Cooling upgrade of the Towing Package. She was pretty emphatic that just installing the oem hitch and wiring adapter was NOT the same as getting the factory towing option.

Just passing on the info she gave me.

Pretty good customer service, kudos to SRT.

So no one knows what the HD engine cooling is? I'm adding the hitch but id like to add the cooling stuff too.

(i'm going to be towing a 14ft trailer with 2 raptors and a dirtbike)(may sell the quads and get a utv)

I tow on the highway too for extended time periods

For the costs involved I'm not sure it would be worth it. For light towing I'm sure the standard cooling is plenty. I'd keep an eye on transmission temps if towing something heavy but that's it.

My 2016 had the towing package and I towed a 3,000lb boat with zero issues. Temps never changed.

This is the way I interpret the the application of a factory towing package.

It is guaranteed to perform admirably under the conditions and limitations specified. In my personal experience it has gone beyond all specifications whenever I have exceeded them with care, in the past. An example of this is we towed from South West Texas to Windsor Ontario Canada with a Jeep Commander. We used a 2400 pound car hauler, and towed additional support gear, luggage, tools, a 1956 Chrysler Imperial with the vehicle loaded to the roof with extra parts. We were easily 1000 pounds plus over the recommended limits, and with care averaged posted speed limits safety with ease.

I wouldn’t do that without a fully thought out towing package.

I am sure that the vehicle can easily tow 5000 pounds safely with an add on hitch with upgrades. Perhaps more with care.

I find the factory package a performance guarantee, and a deal that doesn’t skimp on potential.
