Just trying to get everyone's opinion here. I have American Racing headers with the Akrapovic exhaust on my 2016 Z06 and love the way it sounds. I have a shop checking to see if Akrapovic even makes an exhaust for the Grand Cherokee SRT..
I did a lot of "looking" as I haven't bought one yet, but IMHO, I think the AFE kit sounds the best. I imagine the majority will point you towards the GTHaus kit though.
I have the AFE on mine and it sounds good. Sounds good from inside and for the first time in 6 months since it has been on I got to hear it from the outside when my wife drove it and I was in her car. She punched it and it sounds much better from the outside. I am sure some guys will chip in here that have the GTHaus, they apparently sound the best but lose a bit of power....
Find guys on here in your areas with exhausts on the rigs. Most of the guys would be more then happy to meet up with you guys so you can hear them in person. Don't go on little video/sound clips guys do as they are not a true representation on the sound. Trust me on that one. The AFE sounds shit in sounds clips but in real life sound very nice. If I just went on sound clips I would never have bought one. Heard it in real life and ordered it the same day
There is drone. Not very bad though. They are cat back exhaust not axle back. Borla are axel back. The drone is only there when the MDS kicks in. I switched my MDS off and it is perfect.
I just put on the Borla Atak on my 2014. All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! This has been the best sounding vehicle I have ever had. I'm constantly getting compliments on it. Not load on the freeway but put your foot down and it comes to life.
I looked at the Borla Atak also. I haven't heard it on a Jeep though. My buddy has one on his Camaro. Everyone keeps saying AFE is the way to go. Do you get much drone with the Borla??
I'm in Canada and own an auto repair business, so just got it thru one of my wholesalers.
As far as drone, it has a very slight drone at 60mph that only comes from the rear of the vehicle. Nothing from the x-pipe area at all. It's definitely worse with the eco mode (mds) turned on. At 67mph, it's almost non-existant (even with eco on). At 40mph, again, it's there, but doesn't bother me any. I LOVE the way it sounds.
I'm struggling a bit here. From a sound point of view I had decided to change only the header to a long tube one and keep the rest of the oem system. Then I read it noticeably impacts torque / pick up down low. And it probably throws a CEL from the o2 sensors, when I was hoping to stay on stock tune.
I really don't want the drone from a cat back. It seems like even the recommended ones here basically have it. Halp me out guys what should I do?
Borla ATAK cat-back does not drone unless you force it to....drive like grandma at 35 in D on flat ground (MDS active), yeah some but drive it proper > and no drone....but....I drive 100% in S unless a long highway cruise then in D and with MDS on at 65-80, I cannot detect any drone...in S there is zero.zero drone.
Well most metro roads where I live actually are 50 or 60 kph which is 31-37 mph. So those speeds are relevant to me. Other than that I do some highway driving for camping/fishing etc trips.
So far I have only installed an air filter. I still have some trouble picking up on when MDS kicks in and out. Always leaving the car in sports is not an ideal solution.
Thanks for everyone's import so far. I'm from Australia so I'm going to pay out of my arse to import a system so I really want to get it right the first time. And I want it to sound throaty as **** when you rip into some full throttle / higher RPMs but drone free/painless at other times. I really need it to be more 'euro prestige' sounding than 'American ricer' because I will have VIPs and clients in the car from time to time.
I have a Corsa exhaust on my Jeep and it is almost perfect for me. You can hear it a bit when cruising along and like the others, when you put the peddle down it comes to life. If I could change one thing about it, it would be to have it a bit less "raspy".
Here's a good video of what it sounds like. Not my Jeep but this sounds like the same setup. And to be fair, my Jeep came with the Corsa already on it so I don't honestly know a ton about it.
Thanks for everyone's input. I spent another 8 hours straining to hear youtube videos and then pretty much settled on the AFE.
I am concerned after reading this and other threads that it may release the kraken of rattles and drones on my ears, as well as make me hate MDS (currently don't really notice it). But it's a fairly cheap system so I'll just risk it and resell if I'm not happy with it.
The rusting some people have mentioned from the 409 SS is also a concern. We don't salt roads here (seems a bizarre thing), but there is plenty of salt around at times from the ocean, and I do some coastal, beach, and car ferry trips. But hey, I'll just try to remember to wash it down after.
